- A pleasing example of both the type and die marriage, both sides are originally preserved in a blend of steel-brown and golden-copper. The surfaces are hard and tight with only wispy handling marks that are easily overlooked by the unaided eye. Well struck, if slightly off center on the obverse, mentionable softness of detail is confined to the lower right reverse border where no denticulation is present. Closer inspection with a loupe reveals faint remnants of the undertype here and there around the peripheries.<p>This generally obtainable Cohen number is an ideal representative of the challenges that the Mint faced with half cent production from 1796 through 1799. Examples of the 1797 C-2 are known on all manner of half cent planchet stock common during the era, including sheet copper, cut down Talbot, Allum & Lee cents, and spoiled cent stock. Assembling a set of all three is an attainable goal, although we caution that the variety as a whole is very rare in grades above VF.
