Lot Description
Obv: Central perforation with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and the date 1852 below. A crenulated design fills the field between the perforation and the peripheral motifs. Rev: A simple design with the denomination DOLLAR above and an open laurel wreath without fruit below the central perforation. Bright and attractive surfaces are frosty to semi-reflective in finish with handsome orange-gold color. Exceptionally well preserved with eye appeal to spare.
The uspatterns.com website describes this as "the most polished of the 4 gold dollar pattern designs of this year." The present Superb Gem is from an uncracked early die state; most examples of this Judd number in numismatic hands are restrikes from the late 1850s onward. Approximately three dozen gold examples are known, including both thick and thin planchet pieces.
