Otherwise softly frosted in finish, the surfaces show some reflectivity in the fields under a light. Both sides are beautifully toned in a bold array of vivid colors that provide exceptional eye appeal. With silver still absent from commerce in the East and Midwest at the time, the Philadelphia Mint produced only 182,000 circulation strike quarters in 1872. This issue is scarce to rare in all grades, and Mint State survivors such as this are decidedly in the latter category with an impressive Rarity-6+ rating from Larry Briggs (<em>The Comprehensive Encyclopedia of United States Liberty Seated Quarters</em>, 1991). One of the very finest certified, a fleeting opportunity for the advanced collector specializing in this particularly challenging Liberty Seated series.
