Big Sky Collection. Mintage: 4000. 8 graded VF-35, 109 higher at PCGS. From the hugely difficult run of low-mintage circulation strike 3-cent nickels comes this key 1883, replete with amazingly original surfaces that have somehow managed to escape the oft-seen efforts to "improve" the quality by cleaning. Delicate crumbles of 1880s grunge remains in contact with the patina. As every aficionado knows, the trick is always to ensure a late-date example is a true circulation strike and not a circulated proof, and that can be readily verified here by noting several peripheral die cracks on the reverse.
