Lot Description

This vivid honey-rose 1866-S double eagle presents quite well for a lightly circulated example of this key date San Francisco Mint issue. Appreciable frosty luster remains, and both sides retain plenty of bold to sharp strike detail throughout the design. Faint hairlines and some glossiness are noted for accuracy, as is a short dull scrape behind Liberty's mouth; otherwise we see no singularly distracting marks. A nice PCGS-certified AU of this challenging issue, and a coin that would fit comfortably into many advanced double eagle sets.
