Description du lot
1871 Pattern Half Dime. Judd-1069, Pollock-1205. Rarity-7-. Copper. Reeded Edge. Proof-65 BN (PCGS). Longacre's seated Indian Princess design left on globe draped with ribbon that reads LIBERTY, with liberty pole and cap, furled flags behind, date below, reverse from regular-issue die of date. Deep golden tan with frosty, boldly struck design elements and mirror fields, all alive with bursts of bright orange and neon blue that become especially active in a bright light source. The uspatterns.com website suggests just a half dozen examples of the variety are known. This design was used posthumously, as Longacre passed away on January 1, 1869. It was a tribute to Longacre that the new chief engraver, William Barber, used certain of his older designs.
