Manley Die State 3.0m Fuhrman Die State 3. One of the best known varieties of the denomination, the 1828 C-2 is readily attributable by the blundered 12-star count on the obverse. And this is a lovely Select Uncirculated example with steel-olive and antique gold highlights to dominant rose-brown patina. Lustrous and frosty with a bold strike and only a few wispy marks and light carbon flecks precluding an even higher numeric grade. As Manley notes, "although most specimens are in much lower grades, a number of Mint State specimens are known," though hardly enough to satisfy collector demand as is the case with the 1828 C-3s that were once available in hoard quantity. Indeed, Bill Eckberg accounts for only 20 to 25 "true UNCs" of the 1828 C-2 12 Stars variety in his 2019 reference The Half Cent, 1793-1857: The Story of America's Greatest Little Coin.
