- In 1836, the U.S. Mint experimented with several anti-counterfeiting methods. One of those experiments was the "beaded reverse," where the edge denticles were struck differently and more deeply on the reverse. These coins typically have a weak obverse strike due to the changes on the reverse - one of the reasons the experiment failed to gain traction for future dates.
