- The Charlotte Mint struck only 6,966 gold dollars in 1850, the second year of coinage for this Gold Rush era denomination. This is the second lowest mintage in the C-mint gold dollar series, and the 1850-C vies with the 1859-C as the second rarest Charlotte Mint gold dollar. One of just 150 to 250 coins believed extant (per Doug Winter, 2008), this minimally circulated example reveals much of the semi-reflective to slightly granular finish for which the issue is known. Warm honey-gold color with a tinge of pinkish-rose iridescence, both sides also offer impressively sharp striking detail by Charlotte Mint standards. A visually pleasing piece that will catch the eye of astute Southern gold collectors.
