Order Through Chaos Collection. FS-101 (formerly FS-016). Long coveted as one of the premier Redbook varieties across all classic series, the 1916 doubled-die obverse nickel holds a special place in the hearts of collectors, being not only rare, exotic and valuable, but also instantly recognizable even to a casual observer. Exceptionally wide separation in the doubled numerals of the date, and noticeable doubling at either feather are two obvious pickup points. A surprising aspect (or maybe not so surprising given the branch-mint status) of the famous variety is that a signification number were struck on imperfect flans, and in this case, there are no distracting laminations but instead, the careful observer will notice remaining striations on both sides - no doubt remnants of the rolling out of the planchet. Nevertheless, faint luster still lurks in the fields. This appears to be a wonderful, vintage coin with no evidence of cleaning or other mistreatment, such that apricot-grey patina dresses up the entire surface.
