- A beautiful specimen that is essentially brilliant to allow ready appreciation of a remarkable deep cameo finish in a Proof trade dollar of this date. Indeed, both sides possess exceptional contrast between frosty devices and deeply mirrored, highly reflective fields. The first of the Proof-only issues from the final years of the trade dollar series, the 1878 has a mintage of 900 coins. Survivors are eagerly sought by both Proof type collectors and trade dollar enthusiasts, although few are as expertly produced and visually stunning as that offered here.
