The obverse and reverse designs are the same that the Mint used to strike regular issue 1870 gold dollars. Blended mahogany and rose-brown patina with a tinge of olive, this is a sharply struck and handsome specimen. The finish is a tad muted, and a few faint spots also account for the Proof-63 numeric grade, but no blemishes come readily to the fore during in-hand viewing. Although Judd-1023 is traditionally regarded as a regular die trial striking, the uspatterns.com website asserts that it was more likely struck deliberately for sale to contemporary collectors as part of complete off-metal Proof sets. Only seven specimens are believed extant, including the Byron Reed coin in the Durham Museum.
