Losbeschreibung
1873/2 Octagonal 25 Cents. BG-792. Rarity-7-. Indian Head. MS-65 (PCGS). Vivid golden-yellow surfaces offer appreciable contrast between reflective fields and satiny design elements. This is a sharply struck, expertly preserved Gem with exceptional eye appeal. From the firm of Christoph Ferdinand Mohrig of San Francisco, it is one of the Large Indian Head types of 1872 to 1876. The obverse die was first used for BG-791, the die rehardened and the date altered from 2 to 3, and then used in the production of the present variety. This die probably failed soon thereafter, as cuds on the obverse rim at 3 o'clock and below the date suggest -- this would also account for the rarity of this die pairing. The 2003 Bob Leonard census lists a dozen pieces, with his familiar comment "some duplication here," while PCGS CoinFactsaccounts for just nine to 11 pieces known. Tied for CC#1 with the identically certified Jay Roe specimen, this phenomenal PCGS MS-65 will be perfect for another highly regarded collection. Provenance: From the Oregon Collection. PCGS Population: 2; 0 finer. PCGS# 10619. NGC ID: 2BRC. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
