- Obv: A bust of Liberty faces left, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and the date 1871 below. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. This design is similar to that of the regular issue nickel three-cent piece of 1865 to 1889, but on a larger scale. Rev: A laurel wreath encloses the denomination V CENTS, the word CENTS curved and the Roman numeral V reversed with the thick stroke on the viewer's right. Essentially untoned silver gray surfaces with a bold strike and soft contrast between glassy fields and satiny motifs.
