Lot Description
THE BOYLSTON COLLECTION, PART IV A popular and historically important Civil War issue. The 1861-O half dollar is one of the few coins in the entire series of American numismatics that was struck under three different governments: the federal government prior to Louisiana's succession from the union, Louisiana's state government after the state took possession of the mint and its equipment, and under authority of the Confederate States government, after Louisiana joined the Confederacy. This is a very CHOICE Mint State example. Shimmering satiny luster blooms boldly on both sides. Pearlescent silver with hints of clear gold and pale lilac hues. Sharply struck from cracked dies, this coin has a decent eye appeal, despite some minor contact marks. A wonderful example for your Civil War set. PCGS 35, NGC 27. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $5,500 and the last non-CAC example sold two years ago for $4,080. Rare finer, just 18 have graded higher at PCGS, no doubt including duplication. This coin will invite spirited bidding. Cert. Number 81048407 PCGS # 6303
