The mintage of 230-thousand doesn't account for the fact that 1864-S cannot readily be found in better circulated grades. Most seen are well worn, as is the case of other San Francisco dimes of era. A loupe finds unusually nice surface quality here, given that smooth wear and a lack of marks contribute to a refreshingly bold presentation, not that far from mint-state. Setting aside a bit of strike weakness at the head and portions of the wreath, details have scarcely succumbed to post-production handling.
