If the PCGS/CAC MS-68 example offered elsewhere in this sale proves elusive, the Superb Gem in this lot is an equally outstanding alternative in a survivor of this normally scarce and decidedly challenging Civil War era three-cent issue. Silky smooth in texture, the surfaces are decidedly semi-reflective in the fields and host clash marks (as made), which are present on most examples of the issue with which we are familiar and suggest early clashing of the dies. Satiny and fully impressed, the devices are set apart in a manner that provides some semblance of cameo contrast as the obverse dips into a light. That side of the coin is brilliant apart from blushes of reddish-gold peripheral iridescence, while the reverse is richly toned in a blend of blue-gray and pinkish-silver and olive patina. A handsome piece worthy of the strongest bids.
