- 1869 Pattern Five-Cent Piece. Judd-684, Pollock-763. Rarity-5. Proof-63 (NGC). A bust of Liberty faces left on the obverse, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and the date 1869 below. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY and ornamented with a single star, the portrait superficially similar to that seen on regular issue nickel three-cent pieces struck from 1865 to 1889. On the reverse, a Roman numeral V is surrounded by a wreath, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll above. A small Maltese cross is above the scroll. Struck in nickel with a plain edge.<br />
An essentially untoned, silver gray piece with a bold to sharp strike throughout the design. Traces of extremely faint carbon are all that seem to preclude an even higher grade; there are no outwardly distracting blemishes.
