One of the most significant, and also certainly one of the most intriguing offerings for a three-dollar gold piece in this sale. The 1885 is a scarce date in this series, in both Proof and circulation strike formats, and the present specimen shows only a trace of handling that confirms it as a slightly impaired Proof. This takes the form of faint hairlines and a trace of friction, more so on the obverse, but both sides retain virtually complete Proof qualities. Fully struck with a reflective finish and pretty deep olive and brighter orange-gold colors, there is much to recommend this coin to advanced three-dollar gold collectors.
