1856-S Liberty Quarter Eagle. MS-64 (PCGS). A frosty orange gold specimen with intense luster and superlative eye appeal. The strike is full throughout, not always the case for this early San Francisco Mint issue. While 72,120 examples were struck, the vast majority of those were eaten up by the ravages of circulation in the Bay area. The present piece compares favorably to the small quantity of the date known in Mint State -- indeed, it surpasses all but a small number of those with ease. The first collectable date in the denomination from our westernmost mint; the 1854-S is a great rarity with only about a dozen pieces known in all grades, and there was no quarter eagle production in 1855. Absolutely choice for the grade.
