1846-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 14-I. AU-55 (NGC). Vivid medium gold patina blankets both sides of this sharply defined, lustrous AU example. Exceptionally attractive for a Dahlonega Mint half eagle, especially one that saw actual commercial use. This is a challenging grade to find for this date and mint combination, as most seen today are at much lower levels of preservation. Fairly substantial mintage of 80,294 pieces, however all but a tiny fraction were lost over the next 90 or so years. Provenance: From the Collection of Silas Stanley Roberts, 1888-1966. PCGS# 8228.
