Losbeschreibung
Obv: An eagle in full flight to the left, surrounded by 13 stars with the date 1855 below. Rev: Similar to that of the contemporary regular issue large cent, but on a smaller planchet with reduced size of the lettering and wreath. There are two leaves in the wreath below the letter E in STATES. A lovely Gem boasting sharply struck devices on both sides. Both sides are clearly double struck, with the reverse legends showing the boldest evidence. Pleasing brown surfaces show hints of original golden-red and are accented by a delicate iridescent blue overtone. This Gem has the incredible Eliasberg provenance, placing it in one of the most important numismatic cabinets ever assembled.
Due to an increase in the price of copper in the early 1850s, Mint officials began experimenting with various compositions and sizes to replace the old copper large cents. This 1854 Flying Eagle cent is part of that series of patterns that led to the production of the small size copper-nickel Flying Eagle cent beginning in 1856.
