This magnificent coin is boldly lustrous steel-gray with vivid golden-olive and cobalt blue iridescence that is deeper and more extensive on the reverse. The strike is nothing short of magnificent, and the finish is elegant with subtle frosting to the devices that contrasts subtly with semi-reflective fields. Minimally marked, as befits the assigned grade, with abundant eye appeal.
The mintage of the first year Proof 1837 Liberty Seated dime was not recorded, but it was no doubt extremely limited during an era long before the Mint started marketing Proofs to collectors in earnest. The PCGS website suggests that some 25 to 30 examples are known in Proof format, an estimate that matches that put forth by John W. Dannreuther in the 2025 volume in his United States Proof Coins reference series. In Breen's Encyclopedia (1988), the author writes:
In triumph, Mint Director Robert Maskell Patterson on June 30, 1837, ordered the newly completed Gobrecht dies to be placed into the dime press, and some 30 brilliant Proofs struck for presentation to Treasury officials and other VIPs. About 20 of these Proofs survive today, mostly cleaned, some scratched; one is in the Smithsonian Institution, from the Mint Cabinet collection where Chief Coiner Adam Eckfeldt had placed it.
While Dannreuther also estimates the mintage at 30 coins, he disagrees with some of Breen's writing when he opines, "The Proofs...were struck on at least two occasions." Numbers, striking periods and guesswork aside, two things are certain - Proofs of this issue are rare and elusive, and the present piece will see plenty of attention from savvy bidders.
In our opinion the cameo-like obverse of the No Stars type gives it a special distinction. As attractive as the later Liberty Seated issues with stars are, the plain field, also echoed on the half dimes of this type and the magnificent 1836 Gobrecht dollar, impart a special quality. This coin is truly beautiful.
