Lot Description: 1842 Liberty Head Half Eagle. Large Letters. AU-50 (NGC). Vivid golden-yellow surfaces retain ample lively satin to semi-prooflike finish. The devices are impressively sharp across both sides, with dramatic recutting visible to the digit 4 in the date. The Large Letters reverse was once thought to be more common than the Small Letters variety for the 1842 half eagle, though auction data has confirmed that, in fact, the opposite is true. Typically seen in poor states of preservation and with evidence of mishandling, attractive and lustrous survivors like the present piece are truly significant for enthusiasts of 19th century gold.
