January 24 is a day for those who need a little extra motivation to achieve their goals. Known by many as “Just Do It” Day, this January 24 holiday pays homage to a phrase that was popularized by athletic footwear company Nike. The sports shoe giant introduced the phrase beginning in 1988 with a flurry of inspirational advertisements featuring well-known athletes. The enduring advertising campaign has compelled millions of people to “just do” what they hope to achieve. And it was a slogan that has certainly resonated with me as a coin collector, author, and editor.
The notion of “just doing it” has driven me to write articles, publish books, and – yes – even purchase some coins and build some challenging coin sets. And I think it’s what drives a lot of the most successful coin collectors toward meeting their goals. I’m not just talking about the collectors who are financially well heeled. I’m talking about anyone who simply kept pushing toward their numismatic goals, no matter how expensive or daunting they may have been. Take it from me, someone who spent years pursuing a rare Susan B. Anthony Dollar variety and is still seeking a 1981 U.S. Mint Annual Report for a birth year set… Achieving long-time numismatic goals isn’t always about buying six-figure rare coins, or even purchasing coins at all.
A day where we motivate ourselves to go for the goal (or the gold, if that’s your cup of numismatic tea) can jumpstart us to “just do it.” One way we can synthesize this into action? Well, why not take a gander at the many opportunities for building a new wing of your collection on the PCGS Set Registry? This free collecting platform offers a safe, exciting, and fun environment for building coin sets and showing them off to the rest of the world! Imagine completing that long-sought goal and getting to look back on your grand accomplishment realizing that it came together all because you “just did it.”
