As the United States Mint Semiquincentennial coin program builds to its crescendo during the heart of the nation’s 250th anniversary year, one coin in particular is drawing vast praise and much attention: the 2026 Emerging Liberty Dime. The coin was first distributed for circulation around January 5, 2026, and began emerging in channels of commerce shortly thereafter. Reports of the new dime in pocket change, rolls of coins, and elsewhere subsequently began hitting social media and other online platforms in short order.

The 2026 Emerging Liberty Dime is one of several special coins with commemorative designs that hearken to the nation’s 250th anniversary. The coins were authorized by the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 (Public Law 116-330) and signed into law by President Donald J. Trump on January 13, 2021.

The obverse of the 2026 Emerging Liberty Dime “features a determined Liberty as the winds of revolution waft through her hair,” per the United States Mint design commentary for the coin. “With steadfast resolve, [Liberty] faces the tyranny of the British monarchy. Her liberty cap bears stars and stripes, at once a symbol of our burgeoning nation and a reference to early American coinage.” Meanwhile, the reverse depicts “an eagle in flight carrying arrows in its talons, representing the American Revolution and the Colonists’ fight for independence,” with the inscription “LIBERTY OVER TYRANNY” narrating the design.

The obverse was designed by U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program designer Esao Andrews and was engraved by U.S. Mint Medallic Artist Craig A. Campbell. The reverse was designed and sculpted by U.S. Mint Medallic Artist Eric David Custer.
