Privy Mark Coins the Latest U.S. Collecting Sensation

The 2026 Declaration of Independence Quarter with July 4th privy mark is one of many coins recently released by the U.S. Mint with privy marks that keep collectors looking in bags, rolls, and pocket change. Click image to enlarge.

For a long time, United States collectors were keeping their eyes peeled for silver coinage floating around in rolls, boxes, and other corners of circulation. The 50 State Quarters and subsequent circulating commemorative programs that came along after stirred nearly 150 million Americans (according to the United States Mint) to build sets of coins representing the sociocultural mosaic that is America. But lately, collectors have been searching for something that is somewhat more nuanced yet perhaps way scarcer than just about anything that has hit circulation in years: coins with privy marks.

Privy marks aren’t anything new. They’ve been used on coins around the world since the days of English King Edward III’s rule in the 1300s. They finally made their way onto U.S. coins in 2019, when they first appeared on the American Innovation Dollars. In the years since, they have graded quarters, half dollars, and even American Silver Eagles.

But what is a privy mark? It’s a small artistic feature that can commemorate an anniversary, special occasion, or other noteworthy occurrence.

However, privy marks don’t serve as mintmarks, nor do they necessarily denote a rarity or make a coin rare in and of itself. That being said, the fashion in which the U.S. Mint has employed privy marks on coins has in effect made privy marks synonymous with rarity, at least in a relative sense. And this is one reason privy marks have caused quite a stir in numismatic circles over the last few years.

Of particular note has been the 2026 run of U.S. coins with privy marks. Among the most prominent 2026 U.S. coins to feature privy marks are 2026 Declaration of Independence Quarters and 2026 Semiquincentennial President Donald J. Trump $1 Coins with a July 4th privy mark. Many 2026 Enduring Liberty Half Dollars carry the 09-11-01 privy mark encircled by the words “NEVER FORGET.” And there are various other collectible coins, including 2026 American Silver Eagles as well as 2026 Morgan and Peace Dollars, with a Liberty Bell “250” privy mark.

Among those privy-marked issues, only the 2026 Declaration of Independence Quarter can be found in circulation. PCGS Quarter Quest 2026 offered a bounty of $5,000 to the first person to submit their privy-marked 2026 Declaration of Independence Quarter, with three lucky collectors splitting the prize when they all happened to submit their privy-marked quarters at the same time.

Meanwhile, the Enduring Liberty Half Dollar and Trump Dollar have sent collectors into roll- and bag-searching frenzies, with many collectors ordering these products directly from the U.S. Mint in hopes of landing even one specimen with a privy mark. The stakes are high, as these privy-marked coins can fetch multiples of what their non-privy marked counterparts take. Even in cases where values soften as more and more examples of the privy-marked coins appear, the novelty of these special coins remain, and they’re widely popular collectibles regardless of their value.
