Type collectors who wish to acquire a half cent, either as a single piece to represent the denomination or to fulfill the need for a certain design, often have some expensive options to consider. The half cent as a denomination is not only scarce in general, but prices for some examples of the denomination sell for many hundreds of dollars.
This can leave some collectors, particularly those tending to more modest budgets, looking for affordable alternatives that still fit the bill of their specific numismatic goal. Thankfully there are economical options out there, including the 1809 Classic Head Half Cent.
This issue is the first of its type bearing the Classic Head motif by engraver John Reich. A total of 1,154,572 were struck, giving the 1809 Classic Head Half Cent the highest mintage of any half cent struck. This doesn’t necessarily make it the most common, as many were lost to the hands of time. Nevertheless, it remains an accessible date that can be readily found yet still offers much numismatic intrigue.
Among the many things that help make the 1809 a “cool” date are some popular major varieties, including the Circle in 0 and 9 Over 6 variants. The 1809 Circle in 0 is essentially a Large 0 over Small 0 variety, while the 9 Over 6 refers to a variant exhibiting a 9 Over an Inverted 9.
Approachable prices for the 1809 Classic Head Half Cent are what further help make this particular date even more popular among collectors. A G4 example of a basic 1809 Classic Head Half Cent sans recognized variety sells for around $75, while an F12 goes for $120. Meanwhile, the popular 1809 Circle in 0 and 9 Over 6 trade for $85 and $90 in G4, respectively, and in F12 each fetches $285 and $150, in that order.
