Lot Description
Breen Die State II. A handsome piece, originally and deeply toned in steely olive-copper with a few glints of lighter medium brown here and there. Close inspection with a loupe reveals only a trace of microgranularity to the texture, but there is some old, dark crust in the protected areas around and within the design elements that is worthy of attention. Two dull rim nicks at lower right obverse, just past the date, are the only marks of note. Well centered in strike with universally sharp detail throughout the design on both sides. The surfaces of this coin may not be perfect, but the conditionally challenging nature of Sheldon-162 is such that it still ranks high in the Condition Census for these dies. Del Bland, in fact, ranks it as tied for CC#2 in his 2000 census behind only the fabulous Macallister-ANS specimen in EAC MS65; his grade for the Widmer Family specimen is EAC VF35. Bill Noyes says EAC EF45, net VF25, and tied for CC#5.
