Description du lot
Sandwiched in between the federal government's correction of the ratio between gold and silver in the late 1830s and the upheaval in the global bullion market brought about by the California Gold Rush, the 1840s represents the only era when bimetallism was a practical, working success in U.S. commerce. Silver coinage continued to be struck at the request of bullion depositors but, the quarter was among the least popular denominations, resulting in more or less limited circulation strike mintages from the Philadelphia Mint throughout the 1840s. The 1844 has one of the more generous totals from this era with 421,200 pieces produced, but most saw heavy commercial use and were eventually melted between the early 1850s and 1862. A Mint State 1844 quarter, as offered here, is a rare find - although this fact is not appreciated beyond the community of dedicated Liberty Seated collectors. Richly and originally toned, this piece exhibits bold steel-olive patina with blended reddish-orange highlights. Softly lustrous and well struck with uncommonly smooth surfaces at the assigned grade level. This offering represents an excellent opportunity for astute collectors.
