- Breen Die State III. Beautiful golden walnut-brown surfaces retain traces of faded mint color close in to many of the design elements, especially on the reverse. Blooms of olive and rose patina engage some of the high points, further confirming the coin's originality. Sharply struck with minimal wear and few blemishes of even a trivial nature, provenance concerns alone compel us to mention a number of tiny nicks in the left obverse field around the ribbon ends. Although two of the three die marriages known for the 1805-dated Draped Bust cent issue are rated Rarity-1, Sheldon-269 is much scarcer than S-267. With precious few Mint State coins known, including the heavily spotted ESM coin (Stack's Bowers, August 2020:1050), discerning collectors would be hard pressed to do much better than the Widmer Family specimen for the S-269 dies.
