- Obv: Standard Silver design with William Barber's Liberty Seated motif on the obverse. Liberty holds an olive branch in her left hand, and her right hand supports a shield over which is draped a scroll with the word LIBERTY in raised letters. A free-standing liberty pole is behind the portrait. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border, the date 1870 is below. Rev: A wreath of cotton and corn encircles the denomination 5 CENTS with the word STANDARD inscribed along the upper border. Warm golden-brown with a tinge of olive on the obverse, the reverse is more deeply patinated in reddish-copper. Both sides are fully struck with a smooth, billowy texture. As with many Standard Silver types, the Mint distributed examples of Judd-812 to contemporary collectors as part of pattern Proof sets. The uspatterns.com website accounts for about a dozen of these in the hands of today's numismatists.
