- VAM-1B4, Top-100 and a "WOW!" variety. From the VAM guide:
The 1888-O VAM-1B comes in a number of stages, most of which are early die-state (EDS) coins that are not "Scarface". Most of these EDS stages are worth much less than a true "Scarface". Before you buy a coin that a seller claims is a "Scarface", please do your research so that you know what you're really getting.
Here, there can be no doubt as the cataloger has never seen a later die-state than this, and it appears to be a perfect die-state match to the ANACS MS-62 plate coin for the VAM reference. It even appears to be struck to an identical level of sharpness. One slightly broad scuff in the obverse right field limits the grade although eye-appeal for the variety itself gets a huge assist from lovely album toning around both sides. An absolutely sensational catch for the Morgan dollar specialist and one that comes around very seldom.
