Lot Description
1822 Capped Bust Quarter. B-1. Rarity-2. AU-58 (PCGS). Significant absolute scarcity and condition rarity in an 1822 quarter. Both sides are pleasingly toned in iridescent steel-rose, the surfaces revealing bright pink, blue and apricot undertones at direct lighting angles. Ample evidence of a satin to modestly semi-prooflike finish is also seen as the coin rotates under a light, overall sharp striking detail adding even further appeal. This is one of the scarcer dates in the Capped Bust, Large Diameter quarter series, federal records providing a mintage of just 64,080 coins for the year. The two known die marriages of the 1822-dated issue are easily distinguished with B-1, offered here, the perfect denomination and B-2 the scarce 25/50 C. blundered reverse. In grades at or near the Mint State level the otherwise relatively plentiful B-1 variety develops into a significant condition rarity and, indeed, this is one of the nicest examples that we have handled in recent memory. PCGS# 5332. NGC ID: 23RN.
