- 1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 33.16-I.2, W-3620. Rarity-5+. Draped Bust Left. VF-30 (PCGS).
136.5 grains. Faint mahogany and olive brown. The obverse tone suggests an ancient cleaning, but it has nearly completely toned back to a rather pleasing color. A little granular with scattered tiny planchet voids. Two larger ones may be seen, one through the effigy’s neck, the other somewhat broadly streaking behind the portrait. More weakly defined on the reverse than the obverse, not unusual for the variety. Both of the Taylor coins were sharper than this one, but this is pretty much equal to Ford’s.
Provenance: From the Twin Leaf Collection of Connecticut & Massachusetts Coppers. Earlier ex Coin Galleries, August 1985:1432; George C. Perkins, Stack’s, January 2000:381; Tom Rinaldo, April 2003.
