Lot Description
The Mint employed only a single die pair to produce approximately 625 Proof Indian cents in 1867. On the obverse, a thin die scratch from the second diamond on the ribbon extends into Liberty's neck and there is a tiny die chip in the hair above Liberty's ear. The reverse is the same as that used to strike Proof 1865 Snow-PR1 and all Proof 1866 cents; in this marriage it has a tiny die file mark from the denticles at 6 o'clock that was likely imparted when Mint employees repolished the die after its use in 1866. Like all early Proof bronze Indian cent issues, the 1867 is exceedingly rare in premium Gem condition, especially with the amount of vivid light orange mint color retained here. Iridescent toning in microscopically speckled olive-brown further confirms the awesome originality of this specimen. It is outstanding and numbers among the finest seen by both PCGS and CAC. An important opportunity for anyone seeking premium quality in this series.
