Lot Description
1855 Pattern Flying Eagle Cent. Judd-173, Pollock-198. Rarity-7-. Proof-65 BN (NGC). CAC. 91.8 grains. The design is similar to that used to strike the Judd-168 Original pattern Cent that we are offering above, but on the reverse there are fewer leaves in the laurel wreath (there are only two leaves below the letter E in STATES, etc.). Struck in bronze (91% copper, 8% tin, 1% zinc) with a plain edge.
An otherwise medium-copper obverse reveals traces of original faded-orange color as the coin dips into a light. On the reverse we note mottled sandy-tan highlights to a base of bold copper-brown toning. Generally sharp in strike, with no worrisome contact marks or other significant blemishes.
