Lot Description
THE SOMMELIER COLLECTION LM-3. One of the great Red Book varieties of the Draped Bust half dime series. This die was prepared with a broken R punch, so rather than read as LIBERTY, it reads as LIBEKTY. This is an impressive old album toned example in a wonderful collector grade. Clearly this coin was lovingly stored in an old Wayte Raymond or Library of Coins album where it was able to acquire beautiful tones that are concentrated in a concentric pattern on both sides. The strike is generally bold, especially toward the centers, some of the peripheral denticulation is soft on the obverse. The wear is even and light and problem free, there are no distracting marks of consequence to be seen. This piece does not appear to match any certified examples sold. It could have been sold raw until now. PCGS 8, NGC 2, CAC 2. No CAC approved example has sold in auction, the most recent examples have sold between $3,840 and $4,700. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $5,000 and the CAC CPG value is $6,120. Scarce and popular, many survivors are damaged and otherwise not gradeable! This is a wonderful collector grade piece that will delight any collector. Good luck to you, the bidding will surpass previous records for the grade. Cert. Number 25285302 PCGS # 4265.00
