Lot Description
1852-C Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. Winter-1, the only known dies. AU-58 (NGC). Medium antique-gold with some olive gold tinting, plenty of luster and traces of prooflike reflectivity on both sides. Typical strike for the date, somewhat weak at the centers, stronger toward the rims. From a mintage for the date of only 9,772 pieces, down more than 5,000 coins from the mintage of the preceding year. Only a couple of small marks are noted behind Liberty's head. Highly elusive as a near-Mint example. Provenance: From the Augustana Collection. NGC Census: 22; only 9 are finer (MS-62 finest). PCGS# 7764. NGC ID: 25HS.
