- This gorgeous medium pinkish-rose example sports full mint color on lustrous, softly frosted surfaces. With the use of worn dies widespread in the Denver Mint's production of 1917-dated cents, this is an exceptionally well defined coin. It is not quite full, the high points a tad soft, and there is evidence of light die erosion at the borders, but the in-hand appearance is uncommonly sharp for the issue. Of particular note are the wheat stalks on the reverse, which are fully distinct from the borders. There are no troublesome marks, carbon spots, or other blemishes that would call into question the validity of the Condition Census grade assigned by PCGS.<p>This workhorse issue was produced to the extent of 55,120,000 pieces, which were quickly absorbed into circulation as the nation's economy kicked into high gear as the United States officially entered World War I on the Allied side. Worn survivors are plentiful, the result of widespread hoarding beginning in the middle of the 20th century. While enough Mint State coins exist to satisfy less discerning collectors, quality-conscious numismatists will experience considerable difficulty with the 1917-D. The typical example is poorly struck, as above, and curiously this phenomenon is seen more often on full Red examples than those certified in the BN category. Combining vivid mint color, superior striking quality and exceptional eye appeal, the offered coin is a true strike and condition rarity for the issue that will make an outstanding addition to an advanced Lincoln cent collection.
