Lot Description
Deep smoky-blue centers mingle with deep purple and teal at the peripheries. The design elements are fully struck up, frosted and surrounded by moderately reflective fields, this being caused by the depth of the original toning. As expected of the superlative grade, there are no mentionable spots, marks or abrasions of any kind on either side.
In the late 1870s, long-hoarded silver coins came out of hiding, flooding commerce with coins that had not been seen since the spring of 1862. Accordingly, the need for new dimes, quarters, and half dollars was slight. (In contrast the production of silver dollars was unrelated and was due to the Bland-Allison Act of 1878.) Only 800 Proofs were struck of the 1878 issue and few pieces acquired by collectors have been this carefully saved to this day. This Superb Gem Proof is among the finest survivors.
