Lot Description
A monster grade 3 Legged Buffalo nickel, tied for FINEST seen at PCGS and a blazingly lustrous one to boot! WOW. We have handled many examples of this famed Buffalo nickel variant, but only one in such a lofty state of preservation. This borderline SUPERB GEM is TOP OF THE POP. Incredibly lustrous surfaces gleam and glow boldly with an intense, blinding brilliance. This is totally unlike the majority of this issue that are lacking brilliant luster, even in GEM grade. Light golden accents cling to the peripheral devices. The surfaces are divinely pristine and flawless. The eye appeal is off the charts! One of the most famous of all U.S. coins, everyone has heard about the "rare" 3 Legged Buffalo nickel, a coin that is scarce in all grades, but in Gem Mint State as here, they are incredibly rare! This popular variety was created when an employee of the Denver Mint discovered that the dies were seriously clashed. In an effort to remove the clash marks, the inexperienced worker took an emery board and without realizing removed not just the marks, but also removed one of the buffalo’s legs. PCGS 17, NGC 23, CAC 7. There are five graded MS66+ at PCGS and NONE FINER at that service. The only CAC-approved example sold in our December 2015 Regency Auction XV for $88,125. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $95,000. With NONE FINER, this SUPERB GEM belongs in the FINEST of sets! Cert. Number 41700166 PCGS # 3982
