Lot Description

A razor sharp Gem with otherwise untoned surfaces that exhibit subtle traces of iridescent champagne-gold at the rims. Light planchet granularity in the center of the reverse is as made; both sides are expectably free of post-production blemishes for the assigned grade. The premier Proof Shield nickel, the 1866 is also the only realistic specimen type candidate of the Rays design given the rarity of the Proof 1867 Rays. The present example is among the finest certified from an estimated mintage of 600 pieces, and it would make a lovely addition to any high grade set.
