Lot Description
1856 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. MS-61 (NGC). Dominant orange-olive patina with splashes of more vivid reddish-rose at the borders. This handsome piece also exhibits satiny surfaces and boldly rendered design elements. As a Philadelphia Mint issue near the beginning of the series, the 1856 is often regarded as a more readily obtainable three-dollar gold piece in today's market. While this is true of circulated examples, the issue is actually quite scarce and underrated in Mint State, especially relative to the 1854 and 1855, and especially the 1874 or 1878. A find for the astute gold specialist. Provenance: From the Steve Studer Collection. PCGS# 7974. NGC ID: 25M8. Click here for certification details from NGC.
