- Tompkins Die Stage 4/4, Rea et al. Die State d. Fully, if not sharply struck throughout, both sides also exhibit soft mint luster to surfaces that are remarkably smooth for the assigned grade. Attractively toned, as well, with peripheral highlights in iridescent rose-orange, powder blue and antique gold to dominant olive-gray patina.
While this Browning number is relatively obtainable in an absolute sense, Mint State examples are rare. That offered here is not included in either the 2008 Tompkins or 2010 Rea et al. census listings, but if it were it would rank CC#3. Also a conditionally scarce BU type candidate from the early Capped Bust quarter series, this handsome and significant coin will draw strong bids from many segments of the collecting community.
This is the terminal state of this die pairing, the obverse relapped and retaining only two sets of clashed bars at Liberty's ear. The reverse is lightly cracked horizontally through the shield bars, extending to the right border between the letters RI in AMERICA.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: At the time my book was published I had heard about this die stage but never found one to examine or purchase. That changed at the 2008 ANA Convention when I found a mid grade, heavily cleaned example. That coin was sold after purchasing the spectacular Mint State coin offered here.
