Lot Description

Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Mintage: 1000. 16 graded MS-64, 31 higher at PCGS. Perhaps strange to collectors who are more familiar with modern mint issues, the 1885 3-cent nickel saw its mintage of proof examples far exceed that of circulation-strikes by a ratio of nearly four to one. Solid strike detail over mildly reflective fields qualifies this as an early strike but that goes without saying given the absurdly low original mintage. Fragile milk-grey toning affects both sides and joins some minor, scattered carbon flecks as the only upgrade deterrents.
