Lot Description

Judd-623 (R.5) with an obverse that mimics the contemporary 3-cent nickel pieces circulating in 1868. These were struck on nickel stock like that of the 5-cent pieces, having the same alloy, diameter and thickness, although to proof standards with sharply squared rims. The motifs display obvious cameo contrast, but the fields, especially on the reverse, are not reflective enough to warrant special designation.
