- Obv: A scroll inscribed LIBERTY crosses a Federal shield, behind which are two crossed poles topped with a liberty cap and eagle. The Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is above, the date 1896 is below, and 13 stars are arranged at the border seven left, six right. Rev: A curved olive sprig encloses the denomination 5 CENTS with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. One of several different experimental alloys used for the five-cent piece this year, although as the uspatterns.com website observes, the actual metallic compositions of individual examples certified as Judd-1770 or 1771 have not been determined by modern researchers. This golden-tinged Gem Proof is fully struck with modest contrast between semi-reflective fields and lightly frosted motifs.
