1854 Liberty Head Double Eagle. Small Date. Repunched Date. EF-45 (PCGS). CAC. Our multiple offerings of such examples in this installment of the Fairmont Collection notwithstanding, the 1854 Small Date is a scarce and underrated double eagle in grades above basal EF. This inviting Choice EF-45 example is lustrous, well struck and pleasingly smooth for the grade. Attractively original, as well, and sure to catch the eye of astute gold enthusiasts. An interesting variety, the 1 in the date exhibits repunching south, the 54 north. We have handled only a few other examples in recent memory. Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection - Rhone Set.
