Losbeschreibung
An absolutely superb example of this notable rarity, pedigreed to one of the most important collections of Elephant token varieties ever assembled. Choice medium brown with a good deal of mint gloss on both sides, especially prominent on the reverse. Free of any significant impairments, with only a couple of trivial contact marks in the expanse of the open upper obverse field. The surfaces show the usual microscopic scattered pits, typical of the cast planchets used for this issue, and a folded striation is seen inside the rim at the base of the reverse. The centering is excellent, with denticles framing the obverse but for the area between 9 o'clock and 12 o'clock. The aesthetic appeal is exceptional; Mrs. Norweb had great taste and took special pride in her Elephants.<p>We haven't sold an example of this variety that was this nice since the 1983 Roper sale. PCGS has certified just eight examples of this rarity, in addition to some number of examples with Details grades. None have ever been graded finer than this one, though the Roper coin is generally considered Mint State and finest known. We sold a PCGS EF-40 in March 2023 for $12,000. Before that, we hadn't sold one for a decade.
